Season 2011

With 2011 well under way, Knockholt Bowling Club is looking to the new season which starts on April 23.
At the Club's AGM on January 8 (postponed from December because of the snow at that time), the members voted in a Committee which shows only one change from 2010 - Andy Bryant taking over as a Committee Member from Sylvia Tedman. As before, enquiries should in the first place be directed to Secretary Peter Hearn on 01689 836779 or by e-mail at petehearn@dsl.pipex.co.uk

 Please note that the Cluhouse phone number is now 0759 845 7967.

In addition, the Club will as usual be playing friendly matches, normally on Wednesdays and weekends.
One of the dates shown above - either the Bromley Hospice Trophy or the Tom Lee Trophy - will be a charity day when all proceeds will be donated either to Bromley Hospice or the Hospice on the Weald. The next Committee meeting will decide which for this year and they will then be alternated year on year.Although - except Open Day and Invitation Day - the above fixtures are for members of the Club, we welcome spectators at any time and are only too willing to answer queries.
The Club is actively inviting new members, whether they have played before or not. As an encouragement, the previous joining fee of £32 has been scrapped. Fees remain at £37.50 membership (which includes membership of the Village Club ) and £45 green fees. (Pro rata for those joining later in the season ) Once a member, you do not pay to use the green at any time and the only other cost is a fee of £1.50 when playing in a home match to cover the cost of catering.

We have in Tom Ladd a National Coach and Umpire and he is very willing to give advice both to new members and those already in the Club.

Knockholt Cricket Club

The 2010 season started with high hopes for Knockholt CC ,newly promoted to division 2 of the Kent county village league the club was back playing some old foes and several new .

After a couple of unconvincing friendlies Knockholt then restricted Withyham to 165 in the first league encounter. A seemingly comfortable run chase was then made very difficult and then impossible by deteriorating light,heavier rain,Withyhams lack of sightscreens and the intervention of their umpire. The club then recovered to beat Shoreham and Hadlow in successive weekends before losing to old foes Limpsfield. The league leaders Leigh then arrived at Knockholt with their minds seemingly more on England 's World cup opening football match and were thrashed by 140 runs. An 8 run loss to Southborough was disappointing but the first half of the season finished satisfactorily with a thrilling tie at Ightham and a win against 3rd place Flimwell. 4th at half way was by no means safe as anyone seemed to be able to beat anyone on their day. As the holiday season approached it was imperative that a small club like Knockholt won a couple of games fast.  Withyham then won a bad tempered match by 2 runs ,no one will miss them next season, but then unavailability struck hard and the club crashed to another 7 defeats in a row and relegation. A brave final game win against Flimwell left the top clubs in disbelief at our demise .. Outstanding season performances from Neil Hardstone and several spirited knocks from the returning David Thresher were not enough as many players probably did not do themselves justice . That having been said the bigger clubs always had reserves when the holiday season arrived and the club was only once comfortably beaten ..

The good news is that now back in the 3rd division both myself and vice captain Neil Hardstone will have opportunities to play several juniors in the league ranks. Leg spinner Dan Pickering,seamers Adam Thresher Rory Tanner and Alex Harper have already made debuts with several others looking for a place. A more solid batting effort and a more accurate bowling attack will be required to get back up but last time Knockholt were here they produced an unbeaten season.

The now excellent square and outfield has ensured visitors as well as the home side have enjoyed their cricket , harder toil for the bowlers but good news for any dedicated batsman! After further improvements over the winter the club is very much looking forward to a more successful season in 2011.

Evergreens
Tel: 01959-532385

Are you an ‘Evergreen’ or an Old Codger?

Do you like to go out and chat with friends, visit sites of interest and enjoy a good meal?
Do you like to pit your whits against others (in a friendly manner)?
Do you like to hear about peoples’ life journeys?
Or do you stay indoors letting life pass by?

It’s quite strange but the term ‘Evergreen’ has become to suggest ‘old’.
I hear of other ‘Evergreen’ Clubs changing their names and gaining new members straight away! Why? The format of their meetings’ didn’t change.
Well, we at The Knockholt Evergreens (Over 60’s) Club continue to ‘progress with the times’ and grow.

Over the last couple of years we have welcomed 11 new members and although their ages span 30 years, their average age is just 66 years young!

During the last two years we have enjoyed visits to Borde Hill Gardens; Hadlow College; Haskins Garden Centre; Lamberhurst Vineyard; Leeds Castle; The London Eye; Pashley Manor and also enjoyed a Cruise on The Thames. We have popped out for Pub Lunches; Birthday Parties; Garden Parties and Christmas Parties.

We’ve also enjoyed a cross-section of speakers; competitions/quizzes and ‘shows’ – and of course, a cup of tea with a piece of cake.

Does this sound like something you would like to become part of? We meet on alternate Thursday’s in our Village Centre from 1.45pm until 3.45pm.

If so, phone Wendy on 01959-533301 or Phyllis on 01959-532385 and discuss further.

The annual Cheese and Wine evening will take place on Friday 15 April . This was a total sell out last year and we hope everyone will support us again this year. Again this will be in the Village Centre. All events are open to visitors as well as members.

On Sunday 1 May we will be holding the Plant Sale in the Village Centre. This is a chance to buy some interesting and rare plants as well as vegetables and bedding.

We are working hard organising the event for Sunday 19 June which is another Garden Safari combined with the allotments and Vavasseurs Wood Open Day. This was really well supported in 2009 and we hope that the weather will be as good in 2011 as it was then.

Finally, the dates for the shows are:
Summer Show 25 June; Autumn Show 10 September.

We are a small group of like-minded people, - all ages and sizes! Our aim is to present to our audiences a mix of entertainment over the year which could include a variety or musical show, a panto, a play or a music hall.
We are very proud of our Kytens who range in age from 8 – 16. They are a talented, lively bunch who love to entertain.
All of our performances are held in Knockholt Village Hall as are our rehearsals.
We always welcome new faces, both to KATS and KYTens, so if you are at all interested in drama or music, or if you have a flair for the ‘technical’ stuff i.e. lights, sound, backstage or if you just fancy meeting some new people and could help in any way we would be very pleased to hear from you.
Please browse our website, we hope you find it interesting. You will see details of our forthcoming productions and events as well as photos of our past productions.

The Knockholt Carnival

The Knockholt Carnival is one of the largest village carnivals in the South East of England attracting between 7,000 and 10,000 visitors from all parts of the South East.
Apart from a short break during the 1980s the Knockholt Carnival has taken place every other year since it first started in the1950s.
People of all ages come to watch the fantastic themed parade of home made floats, up to a mile long, as it weaves its way through this historic village on the North Downs and which is also the highest in Kent. After the parade people spend the afternoon in Knockholt where there is a traditional country fair with well over 100 stalls and attractions.
The Knockholt Carnival is planned, organised and delivered by the Carnival Committee, made up of local people from Knockholt and its neighbouring villages of Halstead and Cudham. The Committee works all year round (convening soon after each Carnival to plan the event). It also organises other fundraising events in between carnivals.
In recognition of its valuable work throughout the South East , Kent Air Ambulance was the main beneficiary of Carnival 2010.

The next carnival will be in 2012, for more information please visit www.knockholtcarnival.org.uk or email info@knockholtcarnival.co.uk Also, keep an eye out for news of the Carnival in St Katharine's Parish News and in the Knockholt and Cudham section of the Sevenoaks Chronicle.

Knockholt Village Centre Council
Knockholt Village Centre Council

Knockholt Village Centre Council (KVCC) is a registered charity and is the trustee body responsible for the Village Centre which comprises the Village Hall and associated rooms and facilities. The building as a whole is on land leased from the Knockholt Parish Council and also includes Knockholt Club which leases its part of the premises from KVCC.

Knockholt Village Tree Society

Knockholt villagers are lucky enough to have their own areas of woodland - Vavasseur's Wood and Blueberry Wood in Main Road - for picnicking and walking.

A fruitful Apple Tree grows from one minute pip; a Giant Oak from one small acorn; Knockholt Village Tree Society developed from a group of six people who enjoyed trees and had spent many hours working in the woodland in and around Knockholt Village.

Registered with the Civic Trust
Member of the Kent Federation of Amenity Societies

The Knockholt Society was founded in 1975 and functions on a broader front than as simply a residents' association for the village. It seeks to serve as a link between the residents and various local authority organisations, as well as being a ‘watchdog' on planning and development matters likely to have a major impact on Knockholt.

The Society's objectives are:

  • To stimulate public interest in Knockholt;
  • To encourage high standards of planning and architecture;
  • To secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest;
  • To collect and maintain a record of Knockholt history;
  • To be independent of local government, but to encourage a close relationship with the local council while remaining unhampered politically or in the scope of its activities.

Continuing activities of the Knockholt Society include running Neighbourhood Watch throughout the village (contact our chief co-ordinator Slinn on 01-959-532-300 for details of your local link person) and providing an informal Prescription Service for those senior citizens unable to collect for themselves.

The Society would be delighted to welcome you as a member – please contact membership secretary Betty Hinton on 01-959‑532-045. We hold an annual general meeting & social evening where you can meet fellow villagers, air your views and hear what the Society's been up to.

We look forward to meeting you!

Yours sincerely,

 Tony Slinn, Chairman

Royal British Legion

Tel: 01959-533288

The Royal British Legion provides financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served, or are serving, in the Armed Forces and their dependants. Nearly 10.5 million people are eligible for our help – that’s 1-in-6 people. There are 400,000 members – a small number when one thinks about the sacrifice made by our Forces during the World Wars and the 16,000 that have died since, fighting for the freedom we enjoy today.

The Knockholt Branch of the Royal British Legion currently has 32 members whom meet formerly 3 times a year. We lead the 2 Remembrance Services – at the Pound on November 11 th and within St. Katherine’s Church on the nearest Sunday – and then the inevitable A.G.M.

However, we also hold a few social events each year when members and friends get together for a couple of hours to ‘chew the cud’ so to speak! These events are most informal and always end with a keenly ‘watched’ raffle.

Perhaps you support the Legion via standing order through your bank but did you know that this does not make you a member? Membership costs just £11 per year, so why not join us? You don’t have to be ex-forces!

Our Officers:
President: Joan Cooke
Vice President: Nancy Layton
Chairman: Pamela Holmes
Treasurer: Wendy O’Donnell
Poppy Organiser: Pyllis Eagles
Secretary: Peter Logsden 01959-533288
