This year we wanted to take the opportunity to give local people an update on the work we do and the range of services we provide. Please take a few minutes to read the information below, or look at the infographic on this page (use the Zoom link to see a much larger version) and fill this short survey and consultation* about next year’s Council Tax.
As customers and taxpayers, we always aim to provide you with value for money and the best service we can. Though thankfully I know that many of you have never needed to call on us in a crisis, I hope you are reassured that we will always be there when you need us.
Like everyone in the public sector, finances are tight, but we have managed to make significant savings of around £26m since 2010, much of which has been re-invested in our frontline service. We also work closely with police, ambulance, Kent County Council, Medway Council and others to share expertise and resources and deliver efficient services to keep the public safe.
The Home Office inspection team will be here in the New Year and we expect to hear the outcome of that in 2019. What do you get for your money?
- We employ 970 firefighters including 51 new on-call recruits and 24 wholetime recruits
- We have 56 fire stations across the county, with 32 fire engines available during the day, and 50 at night
- All this to protect you and your family for about the cost of a large carton of milk - £1.45 per week for a Band D property
There when you need us
- Our 999 operators answered 36,473 emergency 999 calls – that’s an increase of 29% compared to three years ago
- 20,169 incidents attended last year – that’s an increase of 49% compared to three years ago
- We have specialist teams for water, mud and cliff rescue, chemical incidents, animal rescue, explosions and terrorism
Incidents and activity
- Thanks in part to the efforts of our home safety team, we attended just 547 house fires – the lowest number ever recorded... but 52% of fires in the home still start in the kitchen
- We went to 4,805 medical emergencies where our firefighters were closer than the nearest ambulance (which was mobilised at the same time)
- Crews with specialist first aid and rescue equipment went to 1,046 road crashes, as well as a vast range of other activity including grass fires, floods, industrial fires and severe weather
Helping you stay safe
- We carried out 17,687 visits to vulnerable people in the last year – up by 56% over the last two years
- 97,973 pupils given fire and road safety lessons
- We provided advice and reassurance to 7,000 local people in high-rise flats
